Dorchester-on-Thames is steeped in history. It evolved from a prehistoric settlement, with associated ritual, to become a Roman garrison town. Christianity was established here in 635 AD, with a cathedral and later an Augustinian monastery, Dorchester Abbey. The Abbey, or part of it, survived the Reformation, but the town remained poor, only moving from poverty to prosperity in more recent times. We have even featured in Midsomer Murders!
